Ideas such as hyperconsumption and excess, whether of food or of data, intertwine to explore monstrous, abject, and distorted visualities that emerge from the interaction between artificial intelligence and mukbang. Mukbang is an online entertainment trend that consists of watching people consume large quantities of food, either while interacting with the audience or in silence. The mediatization of an event as intrinsically human as eating transports us visually into a liminal state of contemplating artificiality, repulsion, and the grotesque. “Bite Byte” is presented as a multiscreen audiovisual installation that traces a process of image degradation. Three typologies emerge: raw, unaltered clips; clips processed by artificial intelligence; and, finally, clips altered by a pixel-sorting algorithm.
